Ruth N. Cuevas-Martinez

Ruth N. Cuevas-Martinez, 75, of Chesapeake, VA, (and formerly of Lawrence, KS), gently slipped into God’s loving hands on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at her daughter’s home after a three-year battle with lung cancer.
The only daughter of Carmen Lopez and Pablo Cuevas, she was born October 7, 1934, in Cataño, Puerto Rico. She married the love of her life, Rafael E. Martinez Boucher in 1956 and was widowed in 2007. Ruth devoted much of her life to supporting her husband’s career during his military service overseas, and raising their three children, but she also found time to earn a B.A. Degree in 1978 from St. Mary College in Leavenworth, Kansas. She was an Assistant Spanish Language Instructor at the University of Kansas before finding employment at Sallie Mae. Eventually she went back to her first love of tutoring and teaching Spanish, especially to young children.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Richard (Teresa), Rebecca (Thomas), Rachel (Randall), six grandchildren whom she doted on (Matthew, John Michael, Christopher, Jonathan, Forrest, and Preston), and many dear friends.
A Christian wake service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 19, 2010, with family receiving friends following the service until 8:30 p.m. at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake.
Family and friends are also invited to sign the online guestbook and view the Christian Wake Service via live web cast at www.omanfh.com.
A Roman Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 621 Cedar Rd, Chesapeake. Father Romeo Jazmin will officiate. According to Ruth’s wishes, please consider contributions to Lung Cancer Research or Diabetes Foundation in lieu of flowers.
