Gloria Carlton Miner 1937 - 2010 Moultrie, Ga.
A memorial service for Gloria Carlton Miner, 72, Lawrence, was Monday in Moultrie. Burial was in Westview Cemetery.
Mrs. Miner died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
She was born May 26, 1937, in Moultrie, the daughter of John Morrison Carlton Sr. and Miriam Powell.
Mrs. Miner was a teacher for 23 years at Montessori Children’s House of Lawrence. She was also an editor for AFIA of New York from 1963 to 1969, and taught high school English in Atlanta in the early ’60s.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in American literature from the University of Georgia and did graduate work at New York University.
She was a volunteer for 15 years for Meals on Wheels and Senior Meals. She spent extensive time in France, Italy, Europe and Africa. She was one of the last people to escape from Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo, in 1964.
She married Kenneth L. Miner on Aug. 29, 1966, in New York. He survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Kepler Miner, Lawrence, and Esla Miner Shirk and husband Dave Shirk, Estes Park, Colo.; five granddaughters, Darwin, Sagan, Ella, Hilary and Livvy; and a brother, John Morrison Carlton Jr. and his family, of Moultrie.
