Kiel R. Hayes

Kiel R. Hayes, 70, of Lecompton, passed away December 12, 2010 at Stormont-Vail Health Care.
He was born May 17, 1940 in Smith County at the home of his parents Virgil and Emma (Schoen) Hayes. Kiel was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
Kiel was an avid horseman. He formerly rode bulls in rodeos.
He retired from Wildcat Construction Company.
Kiel was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Perry, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
He was married to Lavonne Haag on May 13, 1988 in Topeka. She survives. An infant brother preceded him in death.
Survivors beside his wife include his children, Mickey Ward and her husband Shawn of Topeka, Virgil Hayes and his wife Diane of Topeka, Mindy Bell and her husband Michael of Tecumseh, Kiel Hayes of Topeka, Kevin Schneider and his wife Michelle of Parkville, MO, Doug Schneider and his wife Pam of Edgerton and Randy Schneider and his wife Tammy of Emporia, two sisters, Alice Hoag of Moorhead, MN and Maril Thompson and her husband Carl of Joplin, MO. Fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family also survive.
Mr. Hayes was cremated. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 203 E. 3rd Street, Perry, where a rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. A private family inurnment will be at a later date in Maydale Cemetery near Olpe.
