Dorothy Smith Anderson

A memorial service for Dorothy Smith Anderson, 100, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Chapel. Private inurnment was held at Pioneer Cemetery.
She died Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
She was born Jan. 6, 1910, in Duluth, Minn., the daughter of Phillip Alden Smith and Leora Pearl Fenton Smith.
Mrs. Anderson grew up on the Minnesota Iron Range in Chisholm, Minn., and graduated from Chisholm High School in 1928. She attended Hibbing Junior College and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1934 with a bachelor’s degree. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta social sorority.
Mrs. Anderson was a longtime volunteer for Audio-Reader, and volunteered at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and also at Cordley School, working with handicapped children. She was active in Delta Delta Delta alumnae activities, and Chapter FZ of P.E.O Sisterhood, where she was a member for more than 50 years. She was also a member of Plymouth Congregational Church for more than 50 years. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the University Women’s Club, the Kansas University Retirees Club, the KU Alumni Association, the Friends of Spencer Museum, Friends of the Lawrence Public Library and Friends of the Lied Center.
She married Kenneth Eugene Anderson on Aug. 1, 1934, at the Smith family cabin in Clearwater Lake, Minn. Dr. Anderson was the former dean of the School of Education at KU and preceded her in death Oct. 19, 1985.
Survivors include two sons, Peter Anderson and wife Joan, Lawrence, and Philip Anderson and wife Patricia, Lawrence; a brother, Alden Fenton Smith, Maryville, Tenn.; three nieces; a nephew; four grandchildren, Craig, Todd and Ken Anderson, and Rebecca Anderson Hughes; and four great-granddaughters.
