Ruth Ann Rutherford

Ruth Ann Rutherford, better known as Nana to her grandchildren, died of cancer on November 28, 2010, surrounded by family in her Lawrence home.
She was born in Axtell, Kansas, on March 25, 1943, to Harry and Nola Crowley and was the youngest of their eight children. Ruth lived in Axtell until her senior year in high school when the family moved to Manhattan, Kansas. It was there that she met her husband of 47 years, M. Allen Rutherford. Soon after their wedding they moved to Southern California where they adopted their daughter. They then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, before returning to Kansas in 1989.
Ruth worked for Travelers Insurance in Phoenix and for Farmland Industries in Lawrence before it closed in 2002. She enjoyed sewing and listening to music in her spare time. When her daughter had her first child, Ruth enjoyed being a grandmother as much, or more, than any other woman. Her oldest granddaughter, Larissa, best remembers her as her Nana who loved to bake cookies with her when Larissa was a little girl.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Allen; her daughter, Kim Augusto and her husband, Dr. John Augusto, Lawrence; three grandchildren, Larissa Augusto, Alejandro Augusto and Isabella Augusto; five sisters and one brother; numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth also was preceded in death by two children who died at birth, and one brother. Though Ruth is gone, she will always be loved by those who knew her.
