Harry Eugene Talley

A memorial service for Harry Eugene Talley, 86, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment will be in Pioneer Cemetery on the KU campus.
He died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.
He was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Blue Springs, Mo., the son of Thomas M. and Gladys Downing Talley.
He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II.
He received a bachelor of science degree in physics from Rockhurst College in 1949, a master of science in physics from Kansas University in 1953 and a Ph.D. in physics from KU in 1954.
He was a member of the technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1954 to 1964. From 1962 to 1964 he was a visiting professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
From 1964 to 1970 he was an associate professor of electrical engineering at Kansas University.
In 1970 he became professor of electrical engineering at KU. He retired in 1989.
The engineering department established the Harry Talley Excellence in Teaching Award in his honor. The award is presented to an outstanding faculty member voted on by graduating seniors.
He belonged to Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi. He was a senior member of IEEE and the Professional Group on Electron Devices. He volunteered for the Lawrence Meals on Wheels and KU’s Audio Reader. He attended the First Southern Baptist Church.
He married Marjorie L. Green on Jan. 8, 1944, in Kansas City, Kan. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Dennis E. Talley and wife Sally, Lawrence; a daughter, Susan E. Guthrie, Austin, Texas; five grandchildren, Charlotte Talley, Ann Talley Hamidi, Nicholas Talley, Rebekah Guthrie Kester and Andrew Guthrie; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Carol and Linda Talley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill.
