Barbara J. Jones 1936 - 2010 Lawrence
A memorial service for Barbara J. Jones, 74, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
Miss Jones died Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 26, 1936, in Junction City, the daughter of Dale V. and Esther J. Rockey Jones.
Miss Jones grew up in Manhattan and graduated from Manhattan High School in 1954. She received a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University. She played oboe in the marching band and orchestra during high school and college.
Following graduation from K-State, she taught at Alta Vista High School for two years before going to Denver where she received a master’s degree in library science from the University of Denver.
After graduation she moved to Lawrence and was employed by Kansas University, where she worked as a librarian for many years helping undergraduates. She also worked as a resource selection librarian, helping to select books for the library.
Miss Jones was an accomplished musician, playing the oboe, and was one of the founders of the Lawrence Woodwind Quintet in 1970. She was a member of Lawrence First Presbyterian Church and participated in Fitness for Life at Holcom Park Recreation Center.
Survivors include a twin sister, Beatrice Jeanette “Bea” Jones, Lawrence; and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father.
