George W. Hartpence 1914 - 2010 Lawrence
Funeral services for George W. Hartpence, 95, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.
Mr. Hartpence died Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Rolling Hills Nursing Center in Topeka.
He was born Sept. 28, 1914, in rural Franklin County, the son of George and Sarah Belle Jones Hartpence.
Mr. Hartpence served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant during World War II. He was stationed in Hawaii and worked as a propeller mechanic.
He worked at Douglas Aircraft and as a home builder in California. When he returned to Kansas, he worked a number of years at Hercules Ammunition plant. He also owned a used car business.
Mr. Hartpence was a member of First Christian Church in Lawrence and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid coin collector.
He married Ruth Aileen Myers on April 20, 1937, in Topeka. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, LaWanda Fritzson, Topeka; a son, Doug and wife Robin, Lawrence; a daughter-in-law, Tricia Hartpence, Baldwin City; six grandsons, Darin and Eric Fritzson and Matthew, Tyler, Connor and Logan Hartpence; two stepgranddaughters, Mallory and Reagan Burton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Roger; a granddaughter, Sara; and his six siblings.
The family will meet friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. before services Saturday at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to Veterans of Foreign Wars, Heart of America Hospice or First Christian Church, sent in care of the mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
