Jesus “Jesse” Martin del Campo, Sr.

Mass of Christian burial for Jesus “Jesse” Martin del Campo Sr., 79, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Martin del Campo died Friday, April 9, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born on June 2, 1930, in Mexico City, the son of Jesus and Magdalena Sanchez Martin del Campo. He moved to Lawrence in 1960 from Mexico.
Mr. Martin del Campo and his family owned and operated the La Tropicana Restaurant in North Lawrence for the past 46 years. He was also the owner of Slow Ride Roadhouse in North Lawrence and was involved as an investor in several other Lawrence and North Lawrence businesses. He was a former construction worker for the laborers union. When he moved to Lawrence, his first job was at the Eldridge Hotel.
He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
He married Severina Gauna on April 27, 1952, in Mexico City. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include four daughters, Maggie del Campo, Laura del Campo, Cathy del Campo, Lawrence, all of Lawrence, and Alma and husband Enrique Franco, Oceanside, Calif.; three sons, Jesse Jr., Charlie, and Victor and wife Rose, all of Lawrence; a sister, Maria Rodriguez, Mexico City; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
The family will greet friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church, 1234 Ky. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at the church.
The family suggests memorials to the church or to the charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St.
