Earle V. Core, Jr.

Services for Earle V. Core Jr., 77, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane, with the Rev. Don Lane officiating. Cremation is planned, with the ashes to be sent to Sri Lanka, where the Buddhist family he sponsored will have additional services.
Mr. Core died of pneumonia Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 6, 1932, in White Plains, N.Y., the son of Hazel and Earle Core Sr.
He graduated from Bethlehem High School in Bethlehem, Pa., and became a high school teacher. He earned a master’s degree in student personnel and guidance from Wichita State University in 1968.
Mr. Core taught or counseled in the U.S., Kuwait and Turkey. He traveled extensively and had visited all 50 states and 98 foreign countries before he was no longer able to travel.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in Denver. He moved to Wichita in 1959. In 2006, Mr. Core joined his daughter to live in Lawrence.
Mr. Core was a member of Kansas National Education Association-Retired, Kaw Valley Bridge Club and Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Wichita. Since his move to Lawrence, he had attended Unity Church.
He married Elizabeth Altfather on June 12, 1954. They divorced in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara VanCortlandt, Lawrence; and five grandchildren, Dalton, Leighann, Skyler, Quillan, and Jaiden Houser.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Ann, in 1966, and a son, Earle III, in 2009.
The family suggests memorials to the church for Cindy Novello’s recovery fund, sent in care of the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Ind.
