Barbara P. Gilfillan

A funeral service for Barbara P. Gilfillan, 93, Rushford, Minn., will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Schleicher Funeral Homes’ Plainview Chapel, with the Rev. Nick Mezacapa officiating.
Mrs. Gilfillan died Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford, Minn.
She was born April 24, 1916, in Lawrence, Kan., the daughter of William and Marie Biklen Pendleton. She grew up in Lawrence, graduated from Kansas University and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
After graduating from KU, Mrs. Gilfillan worked briefly for I.B.M. in Minneapolis.
She and her husband settled in Minneapolis, where she spent most of her life. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed traveling in Europe, New Zealand, the Caribbean and her first love, the North Shore of Lake Superior and the Boundary Waters, where she and her husband canoed well into their 70s.
She was an avid gardener, gourmet cook, bridge player, bird-watcher and loved to walk, snowshoe, cross country ski, skate, camp and canoe and just generally loved the outdoors.
She was a member of the League of Women Voters, Sierra Club, Audubon Society, Owls, as well as many community and church groups.
She married Perry McMasters Gilfillan on Nov. 23, 1940, in Lawrence. They shared 67 years of marriage. He died Dec. 27, 2007.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter.
Survivors include two sons, David Gilfillan and wife Sue, Philadelphia, and Bruce and wife Val, Lanesboro, Minn.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William Pendleton and Al Pendleton and wife Lorita, all of Lawrence.
