Delbert Gene Johnson

Baldwin City — Graveside memorial services for Delbert Gene Johnson, 74, Baldwin City, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City.
Mr. Johnson died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 29, 1934, the son of Hazel Sammer Nichols and Charles Francis “Frank” Johnson. He attended grade school in Baldwin City and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1953.
Mr. Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was called to duty in December 1953. He was discharged in 1957.
After his Navy service, he took the civil service exam and worked on the Railway Mail Service, where he traveled from Kansas City to Denison, Texas, on a regular basis. He transferred to the Baldwin City Post Office in 1965 and later became a rural mail carrier on Route 1 in 1970 and later on Route 3. He retired in November 1989.
Mr. Johnson was a member of First United Methodist Church, Palmyra Lodge No. 23 and the American Legion, all of Baldwin City. He also was a member of the National Rural Letter Carrier Association. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He married Shirley Jean Hunter in 1954. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Dr. Robert Dale, Berryton; and three grandchildren, Sarah Kimberly, Ethan Hunter and Dominic Michael.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kim Hunter, in 1974; and two brothers, Charles in 1996 and Claude in 2002.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. before services Saturday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, 712 Ninth St., Baldwin City.
