Ken Whitenight

Memorial services for George Kenneth “Ken” Whitenight, 94, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Private inurnment will be at a later date.
Mr. Whitenight died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
He was born Dec. 8, 1914, in Shamokin, Pa., the son of Peter F. and Florence Mae Hudson Whitenight.
He was a graduate of Wharton College at the University of Pennsylvania in 1936.
Mr. Whitenight was the former co-owner of Whitenight’s Men’s Shop, which was formerly the University Shop until 1973 and the Town Shop until 1983.
Mr. Whitenight had lived in Lawrence since 1950.
He was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church. Mr. Whitenight was also a former member of the Downtown Lawrence Association, the Lawrence Noon Rotary Club and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association Board of Governors. He also was a past president of the Lawrence Country Club, former president of the Douglas County Red Cross Board, former president of the Lawrence Salvation Army Board, former drive chairman for the Community Chest (now called the United Way), volunteered for the Plymouth Congregational Church and was an escort for Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He married Ethel Hack on Jan. 18, 1936, in Philadelphia. She died Aug. 29, 1993.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Chris.
Survivors include three sons, Peter A. and wife Joanie, Lawrence, G. Kenneth “Ken” Jr. and wife Cindy, Austin, Texas, and James H. and wife Janet, Lawrence; 11 grandchildren, David, Tom, Ted, Matt, Eric, Evan, Brian, Jennifer and Jeff Whitenight, Katie Whitenight Senecal and Nancy Whitenight Wilkins; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the LMH Endowment Association or to Plymouth Congregational Church, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
