Joyce Arlene Steiner

Funeral services for Joyce Arlene Steiner, 56, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in North Lawrence.
Ms. Steiner died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, Topeka.
She was born Jan. 22, 1953, in Red Cloud, Neb., the daughter of Robert “Bob” and Katherine Rice Steiner. She was raised in rural Lebanon, Kan., until 1958, in Marysville from 1958 to 1962, and in Manhattan, where she graduated from high school in 1971. She graduated from Kansas University in 1975, and later earned a master’s degree in library science in 1998 from Emporia State University.
Ms. Steiner enjoyed reading and playing with children, was a 30-year employee of the Lawrence Public Library, and was serving as library youth services coordinator at the time of her death. She enjoyed storytelling, and thousands of Lawrence children will remember her as the “braid lady.”
She also enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Estell Johnson; a daughter, Meagan Arnaue and husband Darrell Brannock, Seattle; her parents, Manhattan; four sisters, Linda Scott, Lebanon, Jean Allen and husband Bert, El Reno, Okla., Barbara Bergin and husband Tim, Ames, Iowa, and Sharon Steiner, Eugene, Ore.; two brothers, Randall Steiner and wife Cathy, and Victor Steiner and wife Denise, all of Manhattan; a sister-in-law, Renae Johnson, Lawrence; two granddaughters, Vivien and Azi; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and friends.
Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The family suggests memorials to The Friends of the Lawrence Public Library to support children’s programs and storytelling, sent in care of the funeral home, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS 66044.
