Dorothy McMeekan Hierl

No public services are scheduled for Dorothy “Dottie” McMeekan Hierl, 95, Lawrence.
She died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.
She was born June 26, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Walter and Lillian Bunting McMeekan.
Mrs. Hierl was a resident of Plainfield, N.J., from 1949 to 2003, when she moved to Lawrence. She attended public schools until she entered Packer Collegiate Institute School in New York. She later went to Miss Florence’s Business School and became a secretary upon graduation.
She was a member of the Cotton Twig at Muhlenberg Hospital, the Helpers Circle of the King’s Daughters, and the Plainfield Country Club. Mrs. Hierl also enjoyed gardening, golfing and traveling.
She married Joseph Wolfgang Hierl on April 8, 1939, in Brooklyn. He preceded her in death in 1985.
She was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Michael and Christopher, and a brother.
Survivors include two sons, Peter Hierl and wife Janet, Lawrence, and Thomas Hierl and wife Karyn, Bethlehem, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, Katherine, Julia, Emily, Erika, Annie, Gretchen, Ian, Alexander, Marina and Suzanne; and three great-grandchildren.
