Alvin J. Howell 1930 - 2009 Lawrence
A memorial service for Alvin J. Howell, 78, Lawrence, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Howell died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 23, 1930, in El Dorado, the son of Allen and Genevieve Tipton Howell.
Mr. Howell was a graduate of El Dorado High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a Korean War veteran. He received an honorable discharge.
In 1965, he received his bachelor’s degree in commercial art from Kansas University. Mr. Howell worked for Bell Telephone in Topeka from 1965 until 1968. From 1968 to 1973, he worked at Curtis 1000 in Lawrence. Mr. Howell was a professional illustrator and in 1973 he opened Howell Creative Studio.
Mr. Howell was a member of Travelers Protective Association and participated in its Adopt-a-Family program each Christmas. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge in Ottawa, as well as a member of the American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 and the Eagles Lodge in Lawrence. Mr. Howell was a member of Junkyard Jazz. He earned his private pilot license and was an avid flier. He also loved photography.
He married Georgia Edith Kermoade on May 24, 1954, in Ottawa. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include his sister, Ruthetta Foss, Commerce, Okla.
The family suggests memorials to the Alvin J. Howell Memorial Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.
