Genzo Akagi 1929 - 2009 Ulysses
Ulysses — Funeral services for Genzo Akagi, 80, Ulysses, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery, with military honors conducted by American Legion Dexter D. Harbour Post No. 79.
Mr. Akagi died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Crowley, Colo., the son of Ihachi and Mika Akagi. He graduated from Crowley High School.
Mr. Akagi served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He moved to Ulysses in 1956. He farmed in Grant County until 1998.
He was a founding member of Jaycees and on the CalKan Co-op board, beet growers board and the ASCS board. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Dexter D. Harbour Post No. 79, and was a former commander. Mr. Akagi ran the American Legion baseball program for many years. He was also a member of the Japanese American Citizens League.
He married Lillian Kido on Oct. 3, 1954. She preceded him in death in 2005.
Survivors include four sons, Mark, Grantville, Don, Fort Worth, Texas, Brett, Maple Grove, Minn., and Greg, Lawrence; two sisters, Asano Quarne, Crowley, Colo., and Sue Nagamoto, Richland, Wash.; a brother, Kaku Akagi, Caldwell, Idaho; and five grandchildren.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
