Betty Sloan 1919 - 2009 Overbrook
Overbrook — A family graveside gathering for Helen E.“Betty” Hess Sloan, 90, will be at the Overbrook Cemetery in Overbrook.
Mrs. Sloan died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at her home.
She was born Sept. 17, 1919, in Stanberry, Mo., the daughter of William and Lola Turner.
Mrs. Sloan lived most of her life in the Lawrence and Coffeyville areas. She lived in Overbrook the last six years to be close to her family.
She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Holy Name Catholic Church of Coffeyville. She was a volunteer at the Coffeyville Regional Hospital and Brookside Nursing Home in Overbrook. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and golf.
She married Lee Hess on July 11, 1936. They shared 30 years of marriage. He preceded her in death. She later married Chester “Chet” Sloan on Dec. 23, 1966. They shared 36 years of marriage. He also preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Hull; a granddaughter, Kristie Koch; a stepdaughter, Pam Berryman; a step-greatgrandson, Michael Blackburn; four brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Marsell, Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Joyce Aldrich, Overbrook; a son, Frank Hess and wife Marge, Overbrook; a stepdaughter, Patty Nance and husband Bob, Galesburg; two brothers; two sisters; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Midland Hospice, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
Carey Funeral Home in Burlingame is in charge of arrangements.
