Ray V. Varnell

De Soto — Funeral services for Ray V. Varnell, 86, Osawatomie, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, De Soto. Graveside services will follow at De Soto Cemetery.
Mr. Varnell died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Specialist Hospital in Overland Park.
He was born March 7, 1923, in Owasso, Okla. He graduated from high school in Walnut, Kan., in 1943.
He served in the Army Air Forces as a gunner in World War II.
He moved to De Soto in 1946 and opened a garage and body shop. He served as chief of police in De Soto. He moved to Osawatomie in 1979 and ran a body shop and furniture and bait shop. He retired in 1988.
He had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in De Soto.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; three daughters, Rhonda, of Shawnee, and Darlene and Della, both of Osawatomie; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and from a former marriage his children Sherida, Diana, Cathy, Daniel, David and Kristy, and 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will meet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel, 32665 Lexington Ave., De Soto.
