Phyllis M. Jones

Memorial services for Phyllis M. Jones, 89, Lawrence, will be at a later date. She donated her body to the Kansas University Medical Center’s department of anatomy. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
Mrs. Jones died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
She was born July 18, 1920, in Williamsburg, the daughter of Charles W. and Flossie Greeve Grigsby.
She graduated from Richmond High School in 1938 and from Emporia State Teachers College in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in music education and a major in violin. She taught vocal and instrumental music in high schools in Eskridge and Osage City. For four years Mrs. Jones was the office manager of the KU World War II Memorial Association that constructed the KU carillon and campanile. She played violin in the KU orchestra for five years. She sang in the choir and was soprano soloist at First United Methodist Church for 30 years.
Mrs. Jones was a member of Sigma Alpha lota, a professional music fraternity, for 69 years. She was also a member of the Lawrence Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha lota, associate member of the KU Alumni Association, and past president of the Lawrence chapter of American Association of University Women. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 62 years. She was a member of Round Table Study Club, and a past member of Lawrence Music Club.
Mrs. Jones wrote poetry and received many awards for it. She conducted writing classes for KU’s Retirees Club and Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano and nature.
She married L. Martin Jones on Dec. 28, 1945, in Osage City. He survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Kevin L. Jones and wife Linda K., Kansas City, Mo.; twin granddaughters, Kyra and Isla; a niece; several nephews; and several cousins.
The family suggests memorials to Good Samaritan Fund of Lawrence Presbyterian Manor or a charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of the mortuary.
