Dorothy M. Kirkham 1920 - 2009 Lawrence
Memorial services for Dorothy M. Kirkham, 89, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church. Inurnment will follow in Highland Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan.
Miss Kirkham died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 20, 1920, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Claude D. and May Elizabeth Polson Kirkham. She graduated from Wyandotte High School, and later studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Kansas City Art Institute.
During World War II, she worked at North American Aviation as a “Rosie the Riveter,” building bombers. She worked for many years at the Unity World Headquarters in Lee’s Summit, Mo., as an artist for its children’s publication, Wee Wisdom. She also worked as a freelance artist. She was a fan of Kansas City and Kansas University sports, especially KU women’s basketball. She was a founding member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Raytown, Mo., and retired to Lawrence, where she became a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a niece, Kathleen Desch and husband Bill, Fayetteville, Ga.; and a nephew, Kirk McClure and wife Jeannie and their daughter, Libby, Lawrence.
