Sam Brooks McNatt 1919 - 2009 Lawrence
A memorial service for Sam Brooks McNatt, 90, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
Mr. McNatt died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was a former resident of Wichita; Tulsa, Okla.; Houston; and Pagosa Springs, Colo. He moved to Lawrence in 2006.
Mr. McNatt was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Maury City, Tenn., the son of Sam C. and Jimmie Stallings McNatt.
He worked for Kewanee Oil Co. for more than 37 years. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America, where he earned his Eagle Scout award. Later as a scoutmaster, he received the Silver Beaver award. He was also a member of Rotary in Pagosa Springs, where he received the Paul Harris Award.
He enjoyed camping, woodworking, traveling to national parks and golfing.
He served as a pilot trainer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a first lieutenant.
He married Ella Holt on Dec. 29, 1942, in Tulsa, Okla. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include three daughters, Jimmie Benedict and husband Ron Phaneuf, Reno, Nev., Sammie Messick and husband Jeff, Lawrence, and Billie Hegge and husband Ron DuVal, Wichita; a son, Sam Hugh and wife Margo Bleasdale, Katy, Texas; six grandsons, Shane and Peter Benedict, Kelly and Kevin Messick and Bryce and Gates McNatt; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Notley, in 2002.
