Herbert N. Haynes

Funeral services for Herbert N. “Herbie” Haynes, 78, of Oskaloosa, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, with American Legion honors conducted by Post 36, Post 225 and Post 387.
Mr. Haynes died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at his home.
He was born Sept. 20, 1931, at West Point, Va., the son of Charles O. And Virginia Ruth Bristow Haynes. He was a 1949 graduate of West Point High School.
Mr. Haynes served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 until his retirement in 1969. He then worked as a U.S. mail carrier for the Leavenworth post office from 1970 until he retired in 1991. He was a member of the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church and served on the Oskaloosa City Council.
He was a charter member of the Oskaloosa Fire Department, and was a member and treasurer of the Oskaloosa Lake Club. He was a member and the current commander of the American Legion Larner-Segraves Post 36 in Oskaloosa.
He married Margaret C. Brown on Oct. 4, 1956, in Oskaloosa. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Floyd, Fall River, Mass., and Don, Oskaloosa; two brothers, Jesse, West Point, Va., and Bill, Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Mary Wyatt and Joyce Bristow, both of West Point, Va.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Virginia Ann Haynes, in 1964.
The family will meet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.
