K. Duane Embers Sr.

McPherson — A memorial service for K. Duane Embers Sr., 87, McPherson, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, 600 E. Marlin, McPherson. Inurnment will be in McPherson Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715, both of McPherson.
Mr. Embers died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson.
He was born Sept. 27, 1922, in rural McPherson, the son of Samuel M. and Esther E. Eklund Embers. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1940.
Mr. Embers took courses in the communications program at the University of Illinois. He continued his education at Kansas State University and through correspondence courses.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He started working for the city of McPherson as a meterman. Through the years, he worked as the superintendent of the McPherson Electrical Department, meter reader for the city Water and Electric Department, superintendent of the Board of Public Utilities, superintendent of operations of the Board of Public Utilities, and retired as the superintendent of operations and Meter Department for the McPherson Board of Public Utilities. He served the city for 40 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in McPherson, Opera House Company and the McPherson Lions Club. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 and American Legion Post 24, where he served as commander.
He married Vivian M. Bird on Jan. 11, 1942, at First Baptist Church in McPherson. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Ken, Manhattan; a daughter, Jan Decker, McPherson; a sister, Dorothy Withiam, Cushing, Okla.; a brother, Robert “Bob” Embers, Lawrence; three granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by two grandsons.
