Harry G. Shaffer 1919 - 2009 Lawrence
Funeral services for Harry G. Shaffer, 90, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow in B’nai Israel Cemetery, rural Eudora.
Mr. Shaffer died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 28, 1919, in Vienna, Austria, the son of Max Shaffer and Tosca Infeld.
Mr. Shaffer attended schools in Vienna, and later attended New York University, where he earned a doctorate in economics. He also served in the U.S. Army in intelligence during World War II.
He was a longtime professor of economics at Kansas University, and an advocate for human and civil rights.
Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Lawrence Jewish Community Center, Unity Church, the Kaw Valley Bridge Club and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
He married Betty R. Rosenzweig on June 7, 1987, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include three sons, Bernard, San Diego, Ron, Orinda, Calif., and Len, Emeryville, Calif.; a daughter, Tanya Shaffer-Green, El Cerito, Calif.; a stepson, Jamie Paul, Worchester, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Rene Carlis, Newport Beach, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to a human or civil rights organization of the donor’s choice.
