Opal J. Temple

Funeral services for Opal J. Temple, 85, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private burial will be in the Highland Union Cemetery in southwest Douglas County.
Mrs. Temple died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at her home.
She was born on Oct. 8, 1923, in Parsons, the daughter of James K. and Mildred Watts Martin.
Mrs. Temple was a retired elementary school reading teacher. She had taught in the Lawrence public school district for 36 years before retiring in 1994. Prior to that she taught in the Kansas City, Mo., school district.
She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and her Master of Arts from Kansas University. She was a member of the Lawrence Free Methodist Church, the Lawrence Teachers Association and the Kansas Teachers Association.
She married Marion O. Temple on July 31, 1960, in Kansas City, Mo. He survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Disney and husband Barry, of Topeka; two sisters; Vera DeMott and husband John, of Lawrence, and Betty Cobb and husband Gene, of Baldwin City; and three grandchildren, Emily Disney, Atticus Disney and Hayley Disney.
Mrs. Temple was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister.
The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Free Methodist Church or to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care, sent in care of the mortuary.
