Paid family tribute

Funeral services for Josephine Stella Walker, 96, Topeka, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow at Oskaloosa Cemetery.
Mrs. Walker died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka.
She was born Oct. 27, 1912, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Dee and Lillie Mae Woods Gaines. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School.
Mrs. Walker was a homemaker. She was a member of the Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher.
After she moved to Lawrence, she became a member of the Second Christian Church. She loved to read and studied the Bible. Mrs. Walker and several of her friends had Bible study in her home.
She married Charles Lee Walker Sr. in June 1947. They were married for 56 years. He preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 2003.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Glenna Maruska; two brothers, Otis and Timothy Gaines; two sisters, Cynthia Jane Gaines Turner and Leopa Gaines Johnson; and a grandson, Wayne Walker.
Survivors include one daughter, Janie Hansard, Topeka; three stepsons, Lester Walker and wife Deborah, and Charles Jr., all of Lawrence, and Clarence David, Lenexa; a stepdaughter, Margarie Walker, Lawrence; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Kimball, Lawrence; 16 grandchildren, Bill Sims, Mike Brown, Kim Brown, Sheon Hansard, Tasha Hansard, Todd Hansard, Amy Hansard, Malika Smiley, Steve Walker, Kevin Walker, Derek Walker, Andrew Walker, Charles Walker Jr., Darren Walker, David Walker and Waymond Walker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to the Josephine Stella Walker Memorial Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.
