William L. Hogle

Funeral services for William L. “Bill” Hogle, 89, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. at Burlingame Cemetery.
Mr. Hogle died Friday, May 1, 2009, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.
He was born Feb. 24, 1920, in Burlingame, the son of Langdon and Elsie McRae Hogle. He graduated from Kansas University and the University of California, and earned the designation of chartered life underwriter from American College, Bryn Mawr, Pa. During World War II, he served for four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the South Pacific theater of operations.
After an initial career in retail merchandising, he entered the insurance business in Lawrence and retired Dec. 31, 1992, after 30 years as an agent with State Farm Insurance Companies.
A former deacon and past moderator of Plymouth Congregational Church, he was also a member of Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. He had served on the Board of Directors of Lawrence United Way, Kansas Association of Life Underwriters and Northeast Kansas Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters, and he was twice president of Lawrence Association of Life Underwriters.
He married Gertrude Toll on March 2, 1946, at Ripon, Wis. They lived in Berkeley, Calif.; Topeka; Burlingame; and in Lawrence since 1963. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Bruce, Overland Park, and Gregory, Denver; two daughters, Teresa Ronsse, Watsonville, Calif., and Susan Stahl, Lawrence; and five grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or to Plymouth Congregational Church, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
