John Donald Wilbur Sr. 1928 - 2009 Oskaloosa
Funeral services for John Donald Wilbur Sr., 81, Soldier, formerly of rural Valley Falls, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. A cremation will follow the services with an inurnment to be held at a later date at Pleasant View Cemetery.
Mr. Wilbur died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at home.
He was born March 13, 1928, in the Sarcoxie Township of southeast Jefferson County, the son of Walter T. and Ruth Gorden Wilbur. He graduated from Rock Creek High School. He had lived in rural Valley Falls since 1966 before moving to Soldier.
Mr. Wilbur was a U.S. Marine and Navy veteran of World War II.
He worked for more than 30 years as a youth service worker and cottage parent at the Boys Industrial Schools in Topeka and Atchison. He was a member of the Ozawkie American Legion Post No. 225.
He married Joyce Satterfield on Dec. 7, 1947. She preceded him in death Oct. 7, 1964. He later married Ada E. Green in April 1966. She preceded him in death Sept. 24, 1987.
Survivors include one son, John Jr., Atchison; two daughters, Teresa “Terri” Thompson, Middleburg, Fla., and Laury Black, Palatka, Fla.; two brothers, Fred, Perry, and Ira “Pete,” Oskaloosa; three sisters, Darlene May, Perry, Ruth Raun, Meriden, and Mary Jane Broaddus, Meriden; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, prior to services, at the funeral home.
