Richard Foster Treece 1918 - 2009 Lawrence
Services for Richard Foster Treece, 90, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Treece died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at his home.
He was born Nov. 22, 1918, in Lawrence, the son of E. Lee and Mildred Foster Treece. He graduated from Oread High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Kansas University School of Business.
Mr. Treece served two tours in the South Pacific in the U.S. Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. He retired from KU as a conference coordinator. He was a volunteer KU Relays official for more than 50 years, as well as a volunteer for the Douglas County Department of Emergency Management for 40 years.
He married Mary Elizabeth Lindsey on Oct. 9, 1944, in Boston Harbor aboard the U.S.S. George E. Davis. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Virginia Crane, Chanute, and Joan Treece, Lyons, Colo.; four grandchildren, Jill Susan and Jeffrey Stephen Crane, Matthew Daniel Treece and Molly Elizabeth Gallegos; and a great-grandson, Robert Kellen James.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Lee Treece, who died in December 1989; and a brother, Robert Lee Treece.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice, sent in care of the funeral home.
