Brian Vernon Jones

Memorial services for Brian Vernon Jones, 60, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Portland, N.Y.
Mr. Jones died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.
He was born Aug. 18, 1948, in Westfield, N.Y., the son of Vernon H. and Violet E. Cornell Jones. He lived for many years in Akron, Ohio, before moving to Lawrence in 2005.
Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war era.
He received a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Michigan State University in 1974. He earned a teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan University in 1977.
Mr. Jones worked for many years as a computer programmer for First Energy in Akron.
He was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church in Akron, where he served as treasurer and a member of the choir. He organized and competed in chess tournaments in southern Michigan and northern Ohio.
Survivors include his mother, of the home; a brother, Stephen A., Detroit; two sisters, Judy K. Taylor, Ypsilanti, Mich., and Cindy Johnson, Lawrence; two nieces; and four nephews.
The family suggests memorials to the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University, sent in care of the mortuary.
