Richard Gordon Bower

Funeral services for Richard Gordon Bower, 94, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Burial with military honors will be in McLouth Cemetery.
Mr. Bower died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 1, 1914, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of D. Earl and Mable E. Kimmel Bower.
Mr. Bower attended McLouth public schools, McPherson College and graduate school at Kansas University. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He was self-employed as a conservation contractor.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the church’s Senior Men’s Association, Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods and Disabled American Veterans. He served on the Douglas County Emergency Management Board.
Mr. Bower married Betty Maxine Thornton on June 3, 1950, in Kansas City, Kan. She died Sept. 30, 2007.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Donald K.
Survivors include two daughters, Merry Bower, Manhattan, and Kerry Bower Chapman, Lawrence; and a brother, John D., McLouth.
The family will greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to American Lung Association, American Heart Association or Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care.
