Edwin Mumford

Funeral services for Edwin “Ed” Mumford, 84, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial with military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Mumford died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 27, 1924, in Pawnee City, Neb., the son of Edwin and Pearl Nutt Mumford. He had lived in Lawrence since July 1952.
Mr. Mumford served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He earned a Bronze Star while serving in the Asian theater.
He worked as maintenance supervisor and head custodian for the Lawrence school district. He retired in 1991 after 28 years of service. He was a former union pipefitter.
Mr. Mumford was a member of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, Scottish Rite Bodies of Lawrence, Acacia Lodge No. 9 A.F. & A.M. and First Christian Church in Lawrence.
He received the Buford Watson Public Service Award.
Mr. Mumford married Doris Golden on Feb. 14, 1952, in St. Joseph, Mo. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Lisa Hoag and husband Chuck, Lawrence; a son, John D. and wife Leslie Green Mumford, West Point, N.Y.; a sister, Jerry Kaiser, Oregon; and seven grandchildren, Jenna, Meghan and Lauren Mumford and Taylor, Chase, Austin and Courtney Hoag.
He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
The family will meet friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s Palliative Care, sent in care of the mortuary.
