John C. Walquist

No services are planned for John C. Walquist, 66, Topeka, formerly of Lawrence. Cremation has taken place.
Mr. Walquist died Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center.
He was born July 20, 1942, in Topeka, the son of Scherl and Agatha Bean Walquist.
Mr. Walquist attended Topeka public schools and graduated from Topeka High School in 1960. He attended Stanford University and graduated from Washburn University in 1965.
During his high school years, he worked as a disc jockey for KTOP and WREN radio stations in Topeka, going by the name Johnny Ford. He later worked as a pilot for United Airlines, retiring as a captain after 30 years of service.
He also worked at Stephens Realty in Lawrence for 13 years. He served on Washburn’s alumni board and was a reader for Audio-Reader in Los Angeles and Lawrence.
He married Sally Shirk in Topeka in 1963. They divorced in 2007.
Survivors include a daughter, Lori Houk and husband Kent, Lawrence; a son, Todd, Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandsons, Coleman and Chase Houk.
