Kurt Steven Simon 1957 - 2009 Alma
Alma — Memorial services for Kurt Steven “Chopper” Simon, 51, Alma, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma, with the Rev. Robert Grimm officiating. Inurnment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Mr. Simon died Saturday, July 25, 2009, at his home following a 17-month battle with lung cancer.
He was born Aug. 1, 1957, in Manhattan, the son of Ray and Marilyn Diepenbrock Simon. He attended grade school at St. John Lutheran School and graduated from Wabaunsee High School in 1975.
Mr. Simon began his 29-year career with Westar Energy in August 1980 at Jeffrey Energy Center working on the fuel crew. He transferred to the Lawrence Energy Center in 1998, where he currently was a machinist. Prior to working for Westar, he was employed with Kraus Bros. Construction, Lietz Construction and Whelan’s Lumber Company.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Alma and IBEW Local No. 304. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, football and spending time with his family.
He married Carolyn Suzanne Strohm on Oct. 10, 1981, in Burlingame. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include his parents; a son, Jacob Simon and wife Siobhan, Alma; a daughter, Katie Ferris and husband Jessie, Wamego; a sister, Linda Conner, Thornton, Colo.; a brother, Richard Simon and wife Kody, Goodland; his parents-in-law, Dean and Carolyn Strohm, Burlingame; a brother-in-law, Jim Strohm and wife Dena, Burlingame; a sister-in-law, Heidi Koger and husband Steve, Osage City; four nieces; five nephews; a great-niece; his dog, Otis; and a grandson due in November.
The family will meet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the church.
