Shirley J. Atchison 1937 - 2009 Ottawa
Graveside services and inurnment for Shirley J. Atchison, 72, Ottawa, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Valley Cemetery along Kansas Highway 68 in Miami County. She was cremated.
Mrs. Atchison died Friday, July 17, 2009, at Wellsville Manor Care Center in Wellsville.
She was born June 5, 1937, on the family farm near Princeton, the daughter of Merle and Adah Baker Fish. She moved with her family to Ottawa and had lived in various other towns and communities in eastern Kansas. She attended schools in Ottawa, Lawrence and Lecompton. She studied nursing at Kaw Valley Vocational School in Topeka, where she obtained her Licensed Practical Nurse degree. After she married she lived mostly in Ottawa.
Mrs. Atchison was a homemaker. She was also employed as a waitress at 50-59 Grill and Country Kitchen, both of Ottawa. She was an LPN at McCrite Nursing Home and Brighton Place Nursing Home, both in Topeka. She retired in 1997.
She was a member of We Care Ministries and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5901 Ladies Auxiliary, both in Ottawa.
She married Owen “Gene” Atchison on Oct. 2, 1953, in Lawrence. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include three sons, Floyd Atchison and wife Alisha, Handford Atchison and wife Janet, and Clyde Atchison and wife Dinah, all of Ottawa; two daughters, Penny Weems and husband Dean, and Peggy Lear and husband Mike, all of Ottawa; four sisters, Karen Kasson and husband Earle, Lawrence, Sharon Munsch, Oakdale, Conn., Donna Crooks and husband Larry, Muskogee, Okla., and Linda Fish, Phoenix; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gary Fish; three sisters, Bonnie Bond, Marilyn Fish and G. Darlene Allen; and a granddaughter, Maria Lear.
The family suggests memorials to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, sent in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.
