William G. Stype Jr. 1930 - 2009 Springfield, Mo.
Memorial services for the Rev. Dr. William “Bill” G. Stype Jr., 79, Springfield, will be at 7 p.m. today at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 2245 S. Holland Ave. in Springfield.
Mr. Stype died Friday, July 3, 2009, after an illness.
He was born May 29, 1930, in Coraopolis, Pa., to William G. Stype and Nellie Patton Stype.
Mr. Stype earned a bachelor’s degree from Thiel College, a Master of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree in 1984 from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. In his 30-year ministry, he served as longtime pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church and as interim or guest pastor at Westside Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, Kan., as well as several other churches in Kansas and Missouri.
He volunteered at an orphanage while serving the Army in Korea, and spent a summer working for voters’ rights in Mississippi in 1964. He led numerous youth mission trips to a Navajo reservation, and with his churches, sponsored 110 refugee families from various parts of the world to resettle in the United States.
He married Lynne Carol Stoner in June 1961. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Jay, Longmont, Colo.; two daughters, Angela Wilson, Moberly, and Martha Arvizu, Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends following the service
The family suggests memorials to the church, Presbyterian Children’s Services or to the Ghost Ranch Conference Center.
