Carl Kenneth Marquette Sr.

Memorial services for Carl Kenneth Marquette Sr., 71, were Wednesday at The Rose Assisted Living Chapel in Ames.Mr. Marquette died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, after a long battle with lung cancer.He was born Jan. 14, 1938, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Robert Sr. and Hazel Marlow Marquette. His family later moved to Lawrence, Kan.Mr. Marquette earned a degree in hotel and restaurant management and worked as a chef in several restaurants.He was choir director at the Christian Baptist Church in Sioux City, Iowa, and gave art lessons to his friends at The Rose in Ames.Mr. Marquette worked on the facade of the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka and also painted a stage curtain for the art department of a high school in Topeka.Survivors include seven children, Kelly Ann Marquette, Karla Jo Peck and Tracy Lee, all of Lawrence, Carrie Lynn Marquette, Florida, Carl K., California, Carl K. II, Ames, and Kayla Ann Crook, Altoona, Iowa; two brothers, Robert and wife Betty, Granbury, Texas, and Joseph and wife Norma, Cleveland; a sister, Trudy Calvert and husband John, Lake Quivira, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents.
