Herbert John Barr II 1924 - 2009 Lawrence
Services for Herbert John “Jack” Barr II, Lawrence, will be private.Mr. Barr died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.He was born Dec. 10, 1924, the son of Herbert John and Eula Mae Barr.Mr. Barr served as a Navy fighter pilot during World War II. He lived for many years in his hometown, Leoti, where he was a rancher and banker. He and his family moved to Garden City in 1965 and lived there until he acquired the Lawrence National Bank in 1974. After selling the bank in 1981, he moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where he made his home until he returned to Lawrence in 2004. Mr. Barr served in the Kansas Legislature for eight years in the 1960s, two years in the House and six in the Senate. He also served for several years on the Kansas Turnpike Authority.Survivors include two sons, John, Ellsworth, and Matthew, Fresno, Calif.; two daughters, Jennifer Whaley, Middletown, N.J., and Stephanie Leek, Overland Park; a brother, Ken Barr, Denver; a sister Rosemary Sheets of Leoti. He also leaves seven grandchildren.Marts Memorial Services in Kansas City, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.
