Loda I. Newcomb 1912 - 2009 Lawrence
Funeral services for Loda I. Newcomb, 96, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.Miss Newcomb died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.She was born June 17, 1912, in Carroll County, Mo., the daughter of Dr. Fay A. and Cora W. Warren Newcomb. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1929 and graduated from Kansas University with bachelor’s degrees in music and music education in 1933, and a master’s in education in 1934. She completed her bachelor’s degree in business in 1944.Miss Newcomb taught in Kansas high schools for eight years and started teaching at Kansas University in 1942. She was in charge of the Secretarial Training Department and the Business Education Department at Kansas University from 1943 to 1966, was assistant director of the University Placement Center from 1966 to 1982, and retired in 1982. She was secretary-treasurer, vice president and president of the Kansas Business Teachers’ Association, and was secretary of the Association of Teacher Placement Officers. She was a member and sponsor of Phi Chi Theta, Pi Lambda Theta and Pi Omega Pi. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, First Christian Church and KU Retirees Club.Survivors include a niece, Nedra Mickey, Shawnee; a niece-in-law, Judy Johnson, Hanover Park, Ill.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.The family suggests memorials to First Christian Church, sent in care of the funeral home.
