Phyllis Harlan McEldowney

Funeral services for Phyllis “Susie” Harlan McEldowney, 86, Overland Park, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.Mrs. McEldowney died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at The Forum in Overland Park. She had lived in Lawrence for 54 years before moving to Overland Park.She was born June 23, 1922, in Cambridge, the daughter of William M. and Esther Brown Harlan.She graduated from Cambridge High School and attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. She graduated from Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Mo. She worked for 25 years as a secretary for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and then for the School of Architecture, both at Kansas University. She retired in 1986.Mrs. McEldowney was a member of Lawrence Free Methodist Church. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the Lawrence Chapter of Sweet Adelines.She married Robert McEldowney on Jan. 20, 1943, in Cambridge. He survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Tim and wife Carol, Overland Park; two daughters, Barbara McEldowney and Jane Dirks and husband Aaron; a brother, Bill Harlan, Lawrence; eight grandchildren, Laura, Ryan, Hannah and Patrick McEldowney, Stephanie Gregg and Chris, Andrew and Katie Dirks; and two great-grandchildren.The family will meet friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday before services at the church.The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Free Methodist Church, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at warrenmcelwain .com, subject: McEldowney.
