Rachel M. Crown 1917 - 2008 Baldwin City
Memorial services for Rachel M. Crown, 91, Baldwin City, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Free Methodist Church.She died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at the Baldwin Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.She was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Smith County, the daughter of Ernest O. and Sarah L. Armitstead Crown.She graduated from Lebanon High School in 1935 and Central College of McPherson in 1937. She received a Bachelor of Science in education from Greenville College in 1944 and a Master of Arts from the University of Washington in 1948.She taught English language and literature in Christian colleges of the Midwest. In 1966 she moved to Lawrence, where she received her Ph.D. in English at Kansas University in 1975. She then taught at the university until her retirement in 1982.She was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Lawrence.Survivors include a brother, John P.
