Betty Jean Deel 1920 - 2009 Baldwin City
Funeral services for Betty Jean Deel, 88, Baldwin City, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Baldwin First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Connie Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin City.
Mrs. Deel died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Apr. 20, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Roy E. and Elizabeth M. Pearson Coleman. She graduated in 1937 from Northeast High School in Kansas City, Mo., and in 1941 from Baker University, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
Mrs. Deel taught mathematics at Baldwin High School for 25 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Baldwin First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women Dorcas Circle, Chapter CK of PEO, American Association of University Women, Alpha Chi Omega Guild, Hestia Study Club and Leisure Hour. She enjoyed gardening, reading and time spent with friends and family.
She married William G. “Bill” Deel on July 18, 1942, in Olathe. He died Dec. 15, 2008.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, Susan Deel-Bryan and Jeffery L. Deel, and a sister, Margaret Chandler.
Survivors include four sons, Jim and wife Ronda, Cincinnati, Sam and wife Margy, Northfield, Minn., Bill and wife Kathy, Lawrence, and Roy and wife Connie, Baldwin City; a sister, Mary Anna Broadfoot, La Mesa, Calif.; five grandchildren, Sarah, David, Chapin, Nathan and Mattie Deel; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Elliot Fox-Deel; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the service time Saturday at the church.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the church, sent in care of the funeral home.
