Edward Joseph Blewitt 1919 - 2009 Abilene
Mass of Christian Burial for Edward Joseph Blewitt, 89, Abilene, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene. Burial with military honors will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Lawrence.
Mr. Blewitt died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at Village Manor, Abilene.
He was born March 8, 1919, in Newark, N.J., the son of Edward F. and Katherine Moran Blewitt.
Mr. Blewitt graduated from Seton Hall University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was a lieutenant commander and captain of a ship during World War II. Following his discharge, he held a seat on Wall Street.
He moved to Lawrence and worked for Capper Publications in Topeka. In 2003, he moved to Abilene to live near his daughter. He was a resident of Sterling House, Abilene, prior to entering Village Manor.
Mr. Blewitt was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Abilene, and the Knights of Columbus in Topeka.
He married Bette Davis on March 9, 1941, at the Seton Hall campus chapel. She died June 1, 2000.
He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mati Blewitt.
Survivors include two daughters, Toastie Racy, Abilene, and Teri Oberzan-Hatfield, Lawrence; two sons, Daniel, Fort Worth, Texas, and Tip, Corvallis, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene.
The family suggests memorials to the church or Hospice of Dickinson County, sent in care of the funeral home, 414 N.W. Third, Abilene, KS 67410.
