Avis S. Thompson

Private inurnment for Avis S. Thompson, 96, Lawrence, will be at a later date in Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Madison, Wis.
Ms. Thompson died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at Medicalodges in Eudora.
She was born June 2, 1912, in Green County, Wis., the daughter of Matthew and Nettie Timm West. She lived in Madison, Wis., from 1950 to 2002, when she moved to Lawrence.
Ms. Thompson graduated from Whitewater State Teacher’s College and taught in the New Glarus, Wis., public schools and later was a substitute teacher in the Madison school district for 15 years.
She was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Madison.
Ms. Thompson married Sanford “Sam” Thompson on Oct. 14, 1936, in Belvidere, Ill. He died April 30, 1983.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Jerry, and a daughter, Martha.
Survivors include a daughter, Su Johnson and husband Ron, Lawrence; five grandchildren, David Tresch, Sara Squiers, Dean Thompson, Scott Cunningham and Jenny Crowell; and eight great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Parker and Preston Squiers, Rhian, Blaine and Bailey Cunningham and Brice and Bradyn Crowell.
The family suggests memorials to the Plymouth Congregational Church Media Fund or Douglas County Senior Services, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
