John Marino

Funeral services for John Marino, 89, Salina, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary in Salina. A reception will follow at 11 a.m. at the Salina Country Club, with graveside services at 3:30 p.m. in the Olsburg Cemetery in Olsburg.Mr. Marino died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at the Kaye Pogue Hospice Center.He was born May 16, 1919, in Dumont, N.J., the son of Dominic and Lucy Marone Marino.Mr. Marino served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Technician Fourth Grade from 1942 to 1945 in the Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. He was the general manager of the Salina Country Club for 30 years, retiring in 1984.Mr. Marino enjoyed playing golf and qualified playing as an amateur in the Kansas City Open in the late 1950s. He also enjoyed horse racing, playing cards and spending time with his friends. Mr. Marino was a member of the Salina Country Club, Salina Elks Lodge 718, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Kansas Senior Invitational Golf Association, for which he served as the executive secretary.He married Viola Carolyn Rolander on Sept. 2, 1943, in Columbus, Ga. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include five children, Carolyn Malone, Manhattan Beach, Calif., Rose Marino and husband David Hann, Lawrence, John C. Marino, Parsons, Lucille Marino, Lawrence, and Anthony “Tony” Marino and wife Laura, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; eight sisters; three brothers; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a daughter, Belle Marino, in 2007.Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.The family suggests memorials to the John Marino/Wally Beets Scholarship Fund, sent in care of the Salina Country Club.
