Jerald “Jerry” F. Lower 1936 - 2009 Leavenworth
A memorial service with full military honors for Jerald “Jerry” F. Lower, 72, Lawrence, will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Leavenworth National Cemetery.Mr. Lower died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Feb. 17, 1936, in Ripley County in Indiana, the son of Bernard F. and Ada Ledford Lower. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Cambridge City.At 19, Mr. Lower joined the U.S. Army as a private first class. He served tours in Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri, serving as a diesel engineer repairman, EW/SIGINT analyst and Unit/ORGN supply man. He also served in Germany and saw combat as an intelligence analyst in Vietnam.He received various military awards including the Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 DVC, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal — 6th Award, Army Commendation Medal and the Marksman Weapons Quality Badge M16.After retiring from the military, Mr. Lower worked for the U.S. Army as a civil servant until he retired in 2004.He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.Survivors include two daughters, Angelique L. Lower and husband Matthew J. Elliott, and Tasha L. Lower and husband Philip Zeikle; two granddaughters, Quinlan S. Muller and Graysen C. Elliott; a sister, Kathy Goodpaster and husband David, Somerset, Ky.; a brother, David and wife Sue Anne, Richmond, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Patricia J. Haas and Janet Isom; and an infant brother, Steven Lower.The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at warrenmcelwain .com, subject: Lower.
