James Calvin Dowell

Memorial services for Dr. James Calvin Dowell, 83, Lawrence, will be held at a later date.
Dr. Dowell died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Brandon Woods in Lawrence.
He was born Feb. 16, 1926, in Elgin, Ill., the son of Dr. Raymond F. and Marie Dowell.
He attended Elgin Academy Prep School and Northwestern University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He attended the University of Illinois Medical School where he received his medical degree in 1949 and was a member of Nu Sigma Nu fraternity.
He interned at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital and he did his residency at the Kansas University Medical Center. During the Korean War, he served as a lieutenant at the Naval Air Station in Millington, Tenn. He became a fellow in the American College of Physicians in 1967, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1977.
Dr. Dowell and his family lived in Lawrence from 1956 to 1962 when he was in the practice of Internal Medicine with the late Dr. James Campbell. The Dowells moved to Salina, where he practiced until 1987, and then he and his wife moved to Litchfield Park, Ariz. The Dowells returned to Lawrence in 2005.
He married Marilyn Lea Parkhurst in 1949 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Mo. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, James and his wife Elisabeth, Phoenix, and John and his wife Virginia, Topeka; a daughter, Diane, Boulder, Colo.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Foley, and her husband and two children.
