LeRoy “Mickey” Mzhickteno

Funeral services for LeRoy “Mickey” Mzhickteno, 91, Mayetta, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Drum services will be Wednesday evening and Thursday at the Danceground building, west of Mayetta. Burial will be in the Danceground Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Mzhickteno died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at his home.
He was born Oct. 16, 1918, on the Potawatomi Reservation, the son of William and Ona Jane Seeley Mzhickteno. He graduated from Mayetta High School.
Mr. Mzhickteno was raised on the reservation. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He later moved to Lawrence and retired from FMC after working for more than 40 years.
Mr. Mzhickteno was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, a 33rd Degree Mason and a member of World War II 35th Division Activities.
He married Madelyn Clark in 1941. They were later divorced. He married Helen Peck in 1989. She preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, LeOna Knoxsah, and two brothers, Billy and Virgil.
Survivors include two daughters, Ona Lee Fleming and husband Richard, Lewisburg, Pa., and Elaine Mzhickteno Barr and husband Dave, Mayetta; a sister, Rosella Knight, Stillwell, Okla.; four grandchildren, Paul Keltcher, Leonore Fleming, Ona Lynn Fralinger and Aaron Streitberger; eight great-grandchildren, Hayden, Morissa, Bethany, Emma, Dandro, Jackson, Anita and Neil; and a special friend, Marge Abney.
