M. Berneice Lester Mitchell 1921 - 2009 Oskaloosa
Oskaloosa — Funeral services for M. Berneice Lester Mitchell, 88, Olathe, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Valley Falls Cemetery.
She died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Olathe Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Easton, the daughter of Andrew D. and Christina M. Luttig Woodward. She was a former Oskaloosa and Valley Falls resident.
Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Holton High School in 1940 and attended St. Mary College in Leavenworth. She earned a nursing degree from St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. She served as nurse manager for Remington Arms and Steel during World War II. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Oskaloosa United Methodist Church and Lowman Hill United Methodist Church in Topeka. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 62 in Oskaloosa.
She married John A. “Jack” Buckles on July 19, 1942. He died April 5, 1954. She married James S. Lester on Aug. 10, 1955. He died Jan. 1, 1966. She married James R. Mitchell on Feb. 26, 1967, in Fort Leavenworth. He survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, John Buckles Lester, Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Mary Jane Duncan and husband Bob, Olathe; a brother, Irvin Woodward, Topeka; and five grandchildren, Bryan, Christina, and Matt Duncan, and James and Richard Lester.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert “Bob” Lester, and a brother, Emmett Woodward.
The family will meet friends from noon to 1 p.m. before services at the church.
